Your anxiety is lying to you: 3 effortless daily actions that will bring you peace
We're in it together.
Some of us feel it more than others, but let’s face it: anxiety is an inevitable part of living a human life. A human, modern life to be specific. The anxious struggle can take many forms, from daily small triggers to long-term anxiety disorders that are more complex to treat. No matter where you find yourself, this article will help you manage your difficult feelings and will balance you out.
As someone who has struggled with generalized anxiety, I see you. To help myself, I’ve tested many methods and tools to help me heal. Today, I’m in control of my anxiety - not the other way around. Although some days are tougher than others.
I know. I know how hard it can be to even think of doing things consistently that can help you feel less anxious. Just the thought of it can make you feel anxious - and the cycle continues.
I’ve read hundreds of articles, some helpful, some counterproductive. I’ve gone to talk therapy and nowadays, I’m focusing on working with the body otherwise known as somatic therapy. It took me a long time to find a flow and integrate what I’ve learned into daily practice. Here are 3 simple things that have changed my life for the better and that require the smallest effort on your part.
1. Dance.
When you read this subtitle, you probably thought one of these things: 1) “I don’t know how to dance”, 2) “I don’t have enough space to dance” or 3) “Heck yes, I love dancing but I don’t have the time or energy to dance regularly”.
Whatever resistance came up in you, I hear you. At the same time, trust me: a consistent freestyle dance regime will keep your anxiety in check.
Feel like you have no moves? Start with jumping around or flapping your arms up and down. Then close your eyes and slowly, let the music take you.
Got no space at home? Move some furniture around - there’s always a little bit of room to make.
Whatever you do, just dance. Ideally once a day, but no pressure! As long as you’re consistent, you’ll notice a difference.
2. Breathe.
Sometimes, all it takes is one deep breath. But make this one count, like so:
Lay down in your favorite spot and find your most comfortable position.
Place your hand anywhere on your body. Let your instinct guide you to a spot that makes you feel comforted.
Close your eyes, take one deep breath, and feel how you have the ability to comfort yourself with the touch of your hand. You might not feel it all the way, but a little goes a long way.
3. Write.
If you’re like me, you’ve done your best to cultivate a consistent meditation practice. This works wonders, and I highly recommend sticking to it. But on days when you feel more anxiety than usual, meditating can make it worse. Sitting in silence with your eyes closed isn’t necessarily motivating when the body and mind are freaking out.
If you don’t feel like dancing or breathing consciously, dump all your thoughts on paper. Grab a notebook and write every single thing that comes up. Don’t stop until you’ve filled at least two pages, although three pages usually allow you to get into the flow. I’ve noticed that when I start jotting things down, I can be self-conscious about how I’m writing. Write that down too! Just keep going for as long as you feel. Soon enough, you’ll feel more free.
The takeaway
Anxiety has become the epidemic of our times. It’s a mask for suppressed emotions, either from childhood or present circumstances that overwhelm you. But you’re in control, believe it or not. There are ways to manage your anxiety, and they don’t always need to be big, like going to therapy (maybe you can’t afford it) or working out (maybe your energy levels are too low).
You can combine practices or you can at least start doing the small things that can and will, make a big change. Give it a go. Dance a dance, take a breath, and empty your mind on paper every day for the next two weeks. Your mind, body, and soul will thank you.
